The automotive sector as a strategic pillar of the economy

At the 6th Convention of the Portuguese Automobile Trade Association (APDCA), key issues such as unfair competition in the sale of used vehicles were discussed.

The event brought together experts in warranties, advertising, financing and technology, promoting a space for dialogue and knowledge sharing. VERA highlighted the importance of transforming data into reliable and actionable information, essential for more efficient and evidence-based management.

We were also present at the conference promoted by CNN Portugal and Standvirtual, held in the auditorium of the Champalimaud Foundation, under the theme ‘The car of the future’. The conference reflected on the new paths of mobility in the 21st century, addressing the rise of Chinese brands, electrification and the geopolitical impacts of Trump’s US leadership.

One of the most memorable moments was the speech by Carlos Tavares, one of the most influential figures in the global automotive industry. Recognised as a visionary manager and strategist, Tavares highlighted:

• Europe’s ‘lack of strategic resilience’, conditioned by dogmatic decisions and excessive regulation, which limit its ability to innovate and generate value;

• The urgent need to ‘increase productivity’, arguing that companies must ‘do more with less’ to offset additional costs and remain competitive.

In this new global context, Portugal and Europe face a highly competitive environment that demands innovation and adaptability to new business models.

The big question is: How can the automotive sector reposition itself in the face of these changes and integrate new ways of creating value?
